Veeam Endpoint Backup for Windows as an awesome free and easy to use backup program.
But sometimes after big Windows updates, especially with Windows 10 Redstone updates, there could be some problems because of altered disk ID’s. Here is a fast guide on how to reset the database to default.
Be aware all settings will have to be reconfigured when doing the steps below.
Problem:
Error Cannot find shadow copy of volume *Name or ID of disk*
This is also the solution for other problems with this software.
Solution:
The long and easy way is to reinstall Veaam SQL database components from the control panel.
The faster and but more technical way is to change a value in the registry.
- Stop the ‘Veeam Endpoint Backup’ service in the services screen, to open it:
- Ctrl+R to open the Run dialogue, type services.msc and press enter
- Edit or create the ‘RecreateDatabase’ registry entry
- Ctrl+R, type regedit and press enter to edit the registry
- Go to Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Veeam\Veeam Endpoint Backup
- Change the ‘RecreateDatabase’ value to 1 if it doesn’t exist:
- Create new value, name it RecreateDatabase as type DWORD 32 bit with the value 1
- Start the ‘Veeam Endpoint Backup’ service again
- Start Veeam again
- You should now be able to configure your backup again, if the settings are still the same, just restart the service once again
